Core Advantages

Six reasons our learners keep coming back

These are not bullet points assembled for a brochure. They reflect the decisions made when designing our courses.

Educator-led, not product-led

Our facilitators have backgrounds in research and adult education, not sales. The courses exist to build your understanding, not to move you toward any particular investment product.

Built for Hong Kong

Tax treatment, HK-listed company payout patterns, offshore dividend handling, and the MPF context are all woven into the curriculum — not added as an afterthought.

Small cohort sizes

Each cohort is kept small enough for genuine discussion. Participants are not passive viewers of recorded material — they engage with each other and with the facilitator throughout.

A genuine progression

The three courses form a logical sequence — from understanding the basics, to constructing an income-tilted portfolio, to building a personal income plan. Each level assumes and builds on what came before.

Participant-centred learning

The most advanced programme includes written exercises and individual facilitator feedback on each participant's developing income plan — not just theory delivered at a lecture pace.

Curriculum maintained annually

Dividend policy changes, shifts in HK tax treatment, and evolving market conditions are reviewed each year and reflected in updated course materials before new cohorts begin.

Expertise

Facilitators who have worked in the field

The people who designed and deliver these courses carry backgrounds in institutional equity research and adult learning. They have spent time thinking seriously about dividend policy, payout sustainability, and investor behaviour — and they bring that thinking into the classroom, not a simplified version of it.

This is not a course put together by generalists. It is built by people whose working lives involved these very questions.

  • 18+ years institutional equity research experience in the lead educator
  • Adult learning design expertise built into curriculum structure
  • HK-specific market knowledge applied across all three courses
  • Active review process ensures material stays current
  • Structured weekly modules with clear reading and exercise paths
  • Exercises are designed for reflection, not rote answers
  • Written income plan developed progressively in the pre-retirement course
  • Facilitator feedback provided on participant work, not just automated grading

Methodology

Learning that compounds, not accumulates

Each programme is structured so that concepts build on one another. Participants do not receive a list of topics — they move through a sequence designed so that later ideas become clearer because of what was established earlier.

The pre-retirement programme concludes with a personal income plan developed by the participant, refined with facilitator input — a tangible output that goes beyond course completion.

Support

Genuinely accessible when you have a question

Participants are not left to navigate a help desk. Questions that arise during the course — whether about the material, about their own situation in general terms, or about the next programme — can be put to a facilitator directly.

The office in Causeway Bay is open through the week, and enquiries before enrolment are handled personally, not by an automated system.

  • Direct access to facilitators during each programme
  • Pre-enrolment enquiries handled by course team, not a call centre
  • Office in Causeway Bay accessible Monday to Saturday
  • Guidance on which programme fits your stage, offered before you commit
  • Transparent pricing with no upsell structure
  • Each course includes all materials — no additional purchases required
  • No ongoing subscription or membership required after completion
  • Alumni can re-join updated cohorts of completed courses at a reduced rate

Value

Pricing that reflects what is included

Course fees cover all materials, cohort access, facilitator interaction, and — for the pre-retirement programme — individual feedback on the income plan. There are no extra charges for access to materials or support during the programme.

Fees are published openly and are the same for every participant in a given cohort. We do not negotiate differently for different enquirers.

Outcomes

What participants leave with

Participants in First Principles typically leave with a much clearer understanding of what dividend investing actually involves — and whether it aligns with their own situation. That clarity is the outcome we measure against, not a certificate or a score.

Those completing the pre-retirement programme leave with a written, personalised income plan — a document they can continue to work with as their circumstances evolve.

  • Conceptual clarity on yield, total return, and payout sustainability
  • Framework for evaluating income-focused portfolio decisions
  • Written income plan (pre-retirement programme)
  • Confidence to engage with financial advisers from a more informed position

What Sets Us Apart

Distinctive features of the Koi Reserve approach

Written income plan as a course output

The pre-retirement programme produces something tangible — a personalised written plan developed over ten weeks, not just course completion notes.

Independence as a design principle

The entire organisation is structured around course fees. There is no advisory revenue, no product partnership, and no referral arrangement that could quietly shape what we say.

HK-specific from the ground up

Rather than adapting generic material, the curriculum was written for the HK context — including the idiosyncrasies of HK-listed company dividend behaviour and local tax considerations.

Facilitators who answer real questions

The interaction within cohorts is genuine. Participants can raise their own situations in general terms and receive considered, context-aware responses — not rehearsed disclaimers.
